Exalted: Name Your Homebrew Charm in 30 Seconds or Less

Hey, Exalted players! Ever want to design custom Charms with names like the ones in the books? Here’s your easy how-to guide!

First, start off with one of the basic patterns used in 90% of Charm names. Sure, there are some weird ones like “Fire Incites Water to a Riot of Clouds,” but most follow one of these templates:

  • “(ADJECTIVE and/or NOUN) DESCRIPTOR”: This is your most basic Charm setup, giving you standards like Flowing Body Evasion, Hot-Eyed Snake Whispering, or Warm-Faced Seduction Style.
  • “(PHRASE NOUN)”: When you’ve re-used all your DESCRIPTORs, you can always resort to less repetitive nouns! Popular Charms of this type include Five Ordeals Odyssey, Glorious Solar Saber, Immortal Malevolence Enslavement.
  • “GERUND the NOUN”: The present participle gives your charm a sense of action, though not too much! Examples include Feeling the Dragon’s Bones, Summoning the Loyal Bow, or the ever-popular Halting the Scarlet Flow.
  • “NOUN of (the) NOUN”: These make you think about George of the Jungle, and who’s more Exalted than that? Check out Eye of the Tempest or Quiver of Souls. More often, though, we’ll tack on an adjective for faves like Cascade of Cutting Terror, Claws of the Silver Moon, or Defense of Shining Joy.
  • “VERB the NOUN”: This one’s a must-have for fans of the Clash. Have a look at Call the Blade, Command the Dead, or Riding the Dragon.

But what about that DESCRIPTOR, you say? Well, there’s a handful of words that you can stick onto a Charm name if you can’t think of anything more original. Here’s a short and not at all comprehensive list!

Not every Charm name turns out great! Personally, I’m not too impressed by “Forceful Arrow” or “Red Haze,” and would rather go with something more bombastic and ostentatious, like “World-Shaping Artistic Vision” or “Immunity to Everything Technique.”

What’s your favorite Charm name?

  1. Interestingly enough, three of my favorite Charm names ended up on my first character’s sheet.

    Heroes Never Die
    You Can Be More
    Crack the Sky

  2. Style Methodology Prana – A Sidereal linguistics charm that automatically generates Martial Arts charm names.

More seriously, I’m not really sure what my favorite charm name is.

This also reminds me of that Exalted name generator website someone made awhile back. it was cool and surprisingly useful.
